- 1. Special Event Commuter Rail (MBTA)
• Description: The MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) typically runs special event trains directly to Foxboro Station (which is adjacent to Boston Stadium) for major events like Patriots games and concerts. These trains usually depart from South Station and Back Bay in Boston. For the World Cup, it’s highly likely additional services will be available – we’ll be sure to update this page with additional information.
• Estimated Travel Time: Approximately 49 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes, depending on the number of stops and specific route for special event service. This does not include travel time to the train station.
• From Hotel Commonwealth to Train Station:
o To Back Bay Station: Green Line T (subway) to Copley Square, or a short taxi/rideshare. This would add approximately 10-20 minutes to your total travel time.
o To South Station: Green Line T to Park Street, then transfer to the Red Line to South Station, or take a taxi/rideshare. This would add approximately 20-30 minutes.
• Cost: Round-trip tickets for special event trains are typically around $20. Regular commuter rail fares can range from $3-$10 one way.
• Game-Day Details:
o Schedule: Train schedules for special events are based on the start and end times of the event. Check the MBTA website (mbta.com/Boston) closer to the World Cup for specific schedules and departure times.
o Post-Game: Trains typically depart 30-60 minutes after events conclude, or when all passengers have boarded. Be prepared for crowds and a potential wait to board.
2. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)
• Description: Rideshare services offer door-to-door convenience.
• Estimated Travel Time:
o Without Heavy Traffic: 35-50 minutes (Foxborough is about 23-26 miles southwest of Boston).
o With Game-Day Traffic: Expect significant delays, potentially 1.5 to 3+ hours, especially closer to kick-off and immediately after the match.
• Cost:
o Without Surge Pricing: Estimated $60-$100+ one way from Boston to Foxborough.
o With Surge Pricing (Highly Likely on Game Day): Can be significantly higher, potentially $150-$250+ or more, particularly after the game.
• Game-Day Details:
o Designated Areas: Boston Stadium has designated drop-off and pick-up locations for rideshares (e.g., Lot 15, near the CVS Health Gate). Follow signage and app instructions.
o Wait Times: Be prepared for long wait times for pick-up after the match due to demand and traffic congestion around the stadium.
o Booking in Advance: While you can’t pre-book an exact price with rideshare, securing your ride well in advance of game day (if possible for your chosen service) might help avoid some last-minute price spikes.
3. Taxi
• Description: Similar to rideshares, taxis offer direct transportation.
• Estimated Travel Time: Similar to rideshare, 35-50 minutes without traffic, and significantly longer with game-day traffic (1.5-3+ hours).
• Cost: Estimated $80-$120+ one way, plus potential surge pricing or fixed event rates.
• Game-Day Details: Taxi pick-up is generally located in Lot 15 or 5B at Boston Stadium. This may be subject to change closer to game-day.
